Floating 2x4 Wall Shelves

The first big project that I took on from a pin were these wall shelves made out of just a 2x4 and some screws. This is the picture off Pinterest:

How hard could that be??

My boyfriend, Brendan, and I decided to get started because we had some bare walls and some vacation time to spare on a project. We decided to make then in New Hampshire at his parents house due to the fact that all the tools we needed were there.
But first a trip for the wood and a big thanks to the Concord Home Depot that steered us in the right direction to "the nicest 2x4s you have."
After we found some nice pieces and the right size screws we made our way back to the house to get started.
Full disclosure I actually chose a 1x3 board because I liked the slimmer look with a 1x6x6 piece of wood for the shelves which we cut ourselves, but you can have HD do it for 50c a cut. Bren chose a 2x4 and a bit longer shelves for his office.

After we constructed them we took them home to our medium sized NYC apartment and prepared to paint them.

I chose a nice neutral green called Sage to go with our white walls and red accent wall. I should also mention that I have a habit of picking paint colors names after food names. The accent wall is Red Tomato, my living room is Saffron with a Chocolate Brown trim, the office is Asparagus trim with White Truffle walls - I don't even do it on purpose.

Next we screw them into their places, framing the bed and adding some nice linear height to the room and utilizing all the possible inches we have to us.

(Don't worry I plan on getting a new lamp as this Lime clashes horribly with the Sage.)

This was our end result. A few 2x4s, dry wall screws AND anchor screws for my paranoid boyfriend, and we've got ourselves some wall bookshelves that look really nice and adds a lot of character to the room without being too craft projecty. Most people who've seen them can't even tell they're home made. The books help that illusion a lot.

Next project will have to be some art for above the bed.
Thanks for reading! If you really want to know specific construction points just hit me up and I'll have my boyfriend answer you.  =P

A New Direction

So I've decided to take this into a new direction - which won't hurt it's readership I'm sure since it has probably never been visited before by anyone unless by someone accidentally stumbling upon it after Googling "30 Rock".
I'm going to use it as a platform for my completed Pinterest Projects. I've been an active member for a year and I've tried lots of things. I've decided that I'm going to document those projects I've actually tried - all 15 out of 250 pins.
We'll see how it goes. Maybe I'll actually start being more active as it has been nearly 2 years since I met TJ and drank an unwanted Snapple from Seinfeld.

Don't worry, I'll still be watching loads of TV at the same time.

Speaking of "mind grapes" I met Tracy Morgan. He hit on me. It was great.

I drank Jerry Seinfeld's unwanted Lemon Snapple today - those are called perks...
